No Federal Window Tax Credit in 2026? Should You Still Replace Your Windows?

No Federal Window Tax Credit in 2026? Should You Still Replace Your Windows?

Wichita homeowners should focus on window condition, comfort, and performance—not an expired federal incentive.

The federal window tax credit may be gone, but the problems inside your Wichita home did not disappear with it.

If one room stays hot all afternoon, your windows feel drafty during winter, or condensation is trapped between the panes, delaying replacement only because a tax incentive ended may not be the best long-term decision.

Under current IRS guidance, the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit is unavailable for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Homeowners who completed qualifying improvements during 2025 may still be able to claim the credit on their 2025 tax return, subject to IRS requirements. For projects completed in 2026, however, window replacement decisions should be based on the home’s condition—not an expired federal incentive.

Start With the Problem, Not the Promotion

Not every older window needs to be replaced. Minor air leaks around an otherwise sound frame may sometimes be improved with caulking or weatherstripping. The U.S. Department of Energy identifies both as practical ways to reduce air leakage around windows and doors.

Replacement may make more sense when the problem involves the entire window assembly. Warning signs can include fogging between panes, deteriorating frames, windows that stick or will not lock correctly, recurring drafts, water staining, and rooms that remain difficult to heat or cool.

Window Performance Is More Than Glass

Window performance depends on more than the glass. Frames, seals, glazing, fit, and installation can all affect air leakage, heat gain, and indoor comfort.

Wichita’s hot summers, strong winds, cold snaps, and changing seasons can make weak areas easier to notice. Before requesting whole-home replacement, identify which windows cause problems and when those problems occur.

A west-facing room that overheats may have different needs than a window with frame damage or failed seals. A professional evaluation should explain whether repair, selective replacement, or a larger project makes the most sense..
